I finally got around to calling Apple last week about the fan on my Macbook Pro.
I was on the phone for a total of 20 minutes, that’s including the 10 minute wait. First I told the guy my fan was getting really loud and then he tried to tell me that its normal for Macbook Pros to get really loud (no shit), I told him again with more emphases on really and loud and was about to mimic the sounds it made and when I remembered I ran a hardware test and it actually gave an error the night before.
With the error code I probably saved a bunch of time. He ran down my options:
1. Go to an Apple Store
2. They’ll send a box
Since going to an Apple Store is out of the question since none are less than an hour away I told him I’ll take the box. He didn’t really have to tell me this since this is the second time this year I had to send it in, but oh well.
I sent it out to Apple on Wednesday and they fixed it up the next morning. I followed the Repair Status page all day. They ran diagnostics for like 4 hours and repaired it for 3. They sent it right back out on Friday.
My computer sat in Nashville all weekend at the DHL facility until they sent it out for delivery this morning. It arrived at my house just before noon. I looked through the papers expecting that they changed the motherboard or something since it took too long. Nope, they just changed both fans. I looked at all the papers a little more and it seems they checked out my battery too. I didn’t ask them to but they did. I don’t care, it would’ve been better if they replaced it for free but it’s cool they found something else wrong with the computer even if I already knew about it. It’s out of warranty since I wore that battery down. I’m probably not going to replace it since I keep it plugged up all the time anyways.
So far so good. I’m going to play WoW for a few hours this afternoon to really see if it made a difference. It’s still installing now. So far I’m pleased with the whole experience. I wasn’t on the phone that long and I got the computer back in less than a week since I called.
I’m impressed with DHL this time too. The first time I had to send out my Macbook Pro in 2006 this kid that wreaked of pot and cologne came and got it and a week later he threw it on my porch, rang the doorbell, and he was out of the driveway before I even opened the door. This time and earlier this year they had me sign one of those little computer thingies and they were a lot more professional.
